South Sudan - Beyond the numbers: the hidden human cost of conflict

In South Sudan’s Jonglei State, recurring clashes between youth from Duk and Twic East counties have left fear and displacement in their wake. A four-day patrol by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to Duk county witnessed firsthand the impact of the ongoing violence on local communities. Peacekeepers had planned to visit Poktap, Padiet, Payuel and Pajut to assess security conditions in areas where revenge attacks and resource disputes have fueled tensions since 2023. However, the patrol had to be cut short. “Muddy and damaged roads prevented us from reaching Duk Padiet and Pajut, making Poktap our ultimate temporary base for three nights. But despite this, we actively engaged communities and authorities to identify pressing security concerns,” explained Augustine Nana Yaw Asare, Military Liaison Officer. In Poktap, located between Padiet and Twic East, residents described an uncertain life in which even routine activities carry life-threatening risks. “Living in Poktap right now means being trapped in the crossfire. Our survival relies on traveling between Padiet and Twic East, but movement has become nearly impossible. We are stuck, unable to buy food or essentials and are in constant fear of being attacked,” said local resident Dabora Akech Lual. Community leaders say that conflict affects every household. “As a father, whenever you leave home to search for food, you are overcome with fear about what might happen to your family while you are away,” revealed Chief Daniel Mawut Ajak. For people displaced by armed violence in northern Jonglei earlier this year, Poktap offers a fragile sense of safety. Having fled one conflict, they now face insecurity, restricted movement and dwindling access to basic necessities. Amou Ding Malang fled Panyang payam with her six children after violence reached Pajut, an attack that claimed her husband’s life. “I long to return to Panyang, but we are trapped by both a lack of transport and the fear of being ambushed along the road,” she said. Others face the growing threat of hunger. Thon Chuol, who was displaced from Lankien in Nyirol county, warned that dwindling food supplies and erratic rainfall were worsening an already precarious situation. “We are now facing a different threat, hunger. Our hosts have been generous, sharing whatever little food they have, but the crisis is deepening every day.” Yet, the presence of peacekeepers can help restore confidence and create conditions for communities to return home. About 15 kilometers towards Pajut, in Payuel payam, sustained UNMISS patrols have reassured residents of a village once deserted because of intercommunal cattle raiding and abductions. “Following a devastating attack that left many dead and numerous herds of cattle stolen, UNMISS increased patrols. This restored our confidence to stay and encouraged some displaced families to return. We are always grateful when peacekeepers visit our village. Our earnest plea is for these security threats to be addressed once and for all,” said Mary Adhau, a local women’s leader. But lasting peace will require more than security patrols. Local authorities are also calling on young people, community members and the diaspora to reject revenge attacks, help rebuild trust between the two communities and refrain from using social media to incite hate. “Such violence serves no purpose other than the destruction of our own people. We need collective action to stop it,” said Abraham Leek, Deputy Executive Director of Duk County. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Cibolo Texas EDC Awards Over $200,000 in FY2026 Grants

Cibolo, Texas Wednesday Oct 21, 2026 @ 7:00 AM Eastern — The Cibolo Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) announced that it awarded more than $200,000 in business development grants during fiscal year 2026, which ended September 30. The milestone comes during the first fiscal year of the EDGE Grant Program, an initiative designed to encourage business investment, commercial property improvements, and continued economic growth throughout Cibolo. Building on that progress, CEDC has consolidated its business grant offerings into a single program for fiscal year 2027: the Economic Development for Growth & Enhancement (EDGE) Grant Program. The updated program provides two funding tiers, allowing CEDC to support both smaller commercial improvement projects and larger business investments. Two Grant Opportunities for FY2027 The EDGE Grant Program now includes: Standard EDGE Grant: A 50/50 matching reimbursement grant of up to $15,000 for eligible commercial property improvements. Businesses can use the funding for qualifying projects such as façade enhancements, signage, exterior construction, lighting, and parking improvements. Special Circumstances EDGE Grant: Grants of up to $50,000 for qualifying projects involving an investment of $1 million or more. This tier is designed to provide additional support for larger business investments that contribute to Cibolo's economic development goals. By bringing its grant offerings together under the EDGE program, CEDC aims to simplify the process for businesses seeking financial assistance while providing greater flexibility to support projects of different sizes. “The EDGE Grant Program helps Cibolo businesses invest, grow, and strengthen our local economy,” said Clancy Hardin, Assistant Director of Economic Development, City of Cibolo. “The program’s first-year results demonstrate strong momentum, and the updated structure will allow us to support projects of all sizes.” Supporting Business Growth in Cibolo Originally introduced in July 2025, the EDGE Grant Program was created to help existing and new businesses invest in commercial properties, improve their facilities, and strengthen their presence in the community. Local businesses across retail, restaurants, and personal services have received grant awards, including River City ACE, CRUST Pizza, Max & Louie's New York Diner, and other Cibolo establishments. These awards demonstrate the program's reach across different business sectors and its role in encouraging local investment. "The Edge Grant signaled to us that the City of Cibolo was invested in supporting and helping us bring our dream of opening our restaurant to reality,” said Derek Campbell, Owner of Crust Pizza in Cibolo, Texas. “The grant showed us we picked the right city and how important we as small business owners are to the City of Cibolo!  They have continued to support us throughout our entire -process and have shown they are committed to our success.”  "Receiving the EDGE Grant means so much to our family,” said Shannon Eklund from River City Ace Hardware in Cibolo, Texas. “Opening River City Ace has been a labor of love, and we are incredibly grateful to the City of Cibolo for believing in our vision and supporting our investment in this community. From the beginning, our goal has been to create more than just a hardware store, we wanted to build a place where neighbors feel welcome, relationships are formed, and the community comes together. We are so proud to call Cibolo home and look forward to growing alongside this wonderful community for many years to come."   “The City of Cibolo’s EDGE Grant program was instrumental in helping bring Max & Louie’s NY Diner to life in Cibolo, Texas," said Drew Glick, Owner of Max & Louie’s NY Diner, Cibolo, Texas. “The amazing team, led by Clancy Hardin, was incredibly helpful throughout the process, and the availability of this grant to local business owners is truly immeasurable. The funding helped us install the drop-down blinds on our patio, enhancing the comfort and usability of our outdoor dining space, while also helping offset the cost of installing our incredible Max & Louie’s building signs. Programs like the EDGE Grant demonstrate the City’s commitment to supporting local businesses, strengthening the community, and helping businesses create inviting spaces for residents and visitors alike. We are extremely grateful to the City of Cibolo and its outstanding team for their support.” The more than $200,000 in grants awarded during FY2026 reflects CEDC's ongoing efforts to encourage private investment and support the local business community. The program also supports Cibolo's broader economic development strategy, which emphasizes business retention, expansion, and attracting new investment. With the introduction of the two-tier EDGE program for FY2027, CEDC is expanding the range of projects that may qualify for assistance while maintaining its focus on responsible economic development and long-term community growth. Businesses interested in learning more about the EDGE Grant Program, eligibility requirements, or the application process can visit www.cibolotx.gov/EDC or contact the Cibolo Economic Development Corporation at Email Contact.
