The Coca-Cola System Drives USD 3.6 Billion Economic Impact and Supports over 458,200 Jobs Across COMESA Region, Study Reveals

In 2024, the Coca-Cola system contributed USD 3.6 billion in value-added economic activity across the COMESA region. The Coca-Cola system and its value chain supported over 458,200 direct and indirect jobs across the region in sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, retail, transport, and services. The system spent almost USD 1.5 billion on goods and services from suppliers in COMESA member countries, driving local industry growth and economic resilience. During the 19th COMESA Business Forum, a major economic platform for promoting trade and regional integration, the Coca-Cola (www.Coca-ColaCompany.com) system unveiled the results of a new study showcasing its significant economic contributions to the COMESA region. The study was conducted by global consultancy Steward Redqueen and highlights the transformative role Coca-Cola plays in fostering economic progress, creating employment, and supporting local industries. “As this study shows, the Coca-Cola system continues to deliver substantial economic impact in COMESA, creating opportunities through local partnerships, investments, and supply chains,” said Luis Felipe Avellar, President of Coca-Cola's Africa Operating Unit. “The 19th COMESA Business Forum is an important platform to highlight how businesses like those that comprise the Coca-Cola system contribute to sustainable economic development in Africa.” The 19th COMESA Business Forum has brought together leaders from across the region to discuss trade, innovation, and economic growth. Coca-Cola’s active participation as a key collaborator demonstrates its alignment with the forum’s mission of building stronger economic ties across the region’s 21 member countries. The study revealed that the Coca-Cola system, incorporating its network of bottlers, suppliers, distributors, and retailers, contributed USD 3.6 billion to the region’s combined GDP in 2024, representing 0.3% of COMESA’s GDP. Through direct employment and its value chain, the system supported over 458,200 jobs. “For every direct job created by the Coca-Cola system in COMESA, an additional 28 jobs are supported throughout the regional economy,” noted Avellar. In addition to its employment multiplier, the Coca-Cola system’s integration within local economies fuels industrial and community advancement. The report highlighted that Coca-Cola spent almost USD 1.5 billion on suppliers across the COMESA region in 2024, benefitting industries like sugar production, manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. “The Coca-Cola system operates as a critical economic engine across the COMESA region, empowering local suppliers, retailers, and distributors to thrive,” said Alfred Olajide, Vice President of East and Central Africa Operations at Coca-Cola. “The 19th COMESA Business Forum provides a meaningful opportunity to underscore our commitment not just to delivering beverages, but also driving innovation, collaborations, and sustainable development in the region.” Beyond economic contributions, the Coca-Cola system continues to champion sustainability and community development initiatives in the region. Several COMESA member states benefit directly from the Coca-Cola system’s Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, a nearly USD 25 million program that addresses water-related challenges across 20 African countries by 2030. The study leveraged a robust Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) model to capture the Coca-Cola system’s impact across its activities, including operations, local procurement, and extensive value chain linkages. The findings demonstrate how Coca-Cola drives ripple effects through the economy, from agriculture to retail, illustrating the company’s strategic role in driving regional development. Avellar concluded: “The 19th COMESA Business Forum reaffirms the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth. We are proud to collaborate with COMESA in building stronger economies and better futures for the communities we serve.” Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Coca-Cola. KFC is Zambia: More investment, more restaurants, everyday choice

KFC is bringing new investment to Zambia, with more locations, world-class operational expertise and hundreds of jobs. With 17 restaurants across Lusaka and the Copperbelt, and 25 more in the pipeline, KFC is making a long-term commitment to Zambia and demonstrating its confidence in the country’s future growth. Streetwise is the platform making KFC accessible and relevant to everyday Zambians across all income levels. Local leadership, skills transfer and local supply chain development are central to KFC’s long-term presence in Zambia. KFC (http://KFC.co.za) is launching a new growth phase Pa Zed, showing up bigger, bolder and more locally rooted than ever before. The brand is bringing significant investment, an expanded restaurant footprint, and a commitment to becoming part of Zambian culture and everyday life. And Streetwise is central to the story, as the platform that makes KFC accessible and relevant to everyday Zambians across all income levels. It’s how KFC moves beyond being an occasional treat to becoming part of how Zambians live and make their way. “Zambian consumers are resourceful,” says Akhona Qengqe, KFC Africa General Manager. “They make a plan, they make a little go a long way, and they keep moving forward. Streetwise is us saying: we respect that hustle. We’re built for your life, not the other way around." Qengqe says KFC’s investment in Zambia is about confidence in the market and in the brand’s ability to be relevant to Zambians. “Streetwise is how we earn that relevance. It’s not about competing on price alone, it’s about building a brand Zambians turn to as part of their everyday life,” she says. Expanding Pa Zed KFC currently operates 17 locations across Zambia: 13 in the Lusaka area (including the new KFC Mazabuka, which opened in September) and four in the Copperbelt region. The pipeline of 25 new restaurants tells a much bigger story. As well as several more locations in Lusaka, residents of Chingola, Solwezi, Livingstone and Kapiri Mposhi will soon have new KFCs. A further 12 identified sites will expand the brand’s footprint across the country. Qengqe says every new restaurant creates about 30 jobs, about 60% of which usually go to women. “But a job at KFC isn’t just a job. It’s an opportunity, especially at a moment like this when KFC is making clear its long-term ambitions in Zambia,” she says. “Our commitment is to develop experienced local teams and create pathways for talented Zambians to advance.” South African team members supporting some restaurants are there for only one reason, says Qengqe: to transfer expertise and strengthen Zambian operations. “The goal is clear: build restaurants led by Zambians, managed by Zambians, rooted in Zambian communities.” Embedded in Africa With about 1,600 restaurants across 22 sub-Saharan markets, and the ambition to increase that number to 3,000 by 2035, KFC Africa is deeply embedded in the continent’s economic fabric. “In Zambia specifically, we’re aggressively developing local supply chains to strengthen the agricultural sector and empower local businesses,” says Qengqe. “We’re committed to building supply ecosystems that reduce dependence on imports and create lasting prosperity, and this new chapter in Zambia is an expression of that promise.” Today, more than ever before, KFC is Zambia. Get the taste. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of KFC Africa. About KFC Africa:  At KFC Africa, we feed more than hunger, we feed potential.
