Kaspersky identifies vulnerabilities in barcode scanners, posing potential threat for the warehouse industry

Kaspersky (www.Kaspersky.co.za) experts have discovered a new cyber-attack vector via a widely used barcode scanner model that could expose e-commerce supply chains to cyberattacks. The findings, presented at the Security Analyst Summit 2026 in Bali, are part of a security audit of a warehouse digital ecosystem. Modern warehouses are far more than simple storage spaces, they constitute complex ecosystems built upon multiple technologies and devices. With global e-commerce sales nearly doubling (https://apo-opa.co/4yxQIhZ) since 2019 to over $6 trillion, any disruption or delay in the delivery chain can result in massive financial and reputational losses. To identify possible risks Kaspersky Security Services researchers have examined multiple cyber-attack vectors on warehouse infrastructure, including attacks conducted using various devices in warehouse systems, and have found a new attack vector exploiting a vulnerability in a barcode scanner model from a major manufacturer. Such devices are widely used in warehousing, retail, and multiple other sectors. A typical setup has handheld scanners communicating with a base station, which is in turn connected to a workstation or another business system. The main weak point is that there is no authentication between the base station and the scanners. Kaspersky research reveals that these scanners might serve as an entry point into the warehouse OT network. The attack could be conducted through the scanner’s wireless link. Kaspersky researchers found that an attacker within range could inject keystrokes into the connected device and potentially achieve remote code execution without requiring user interaction. In a hypothetical attack, a user may be carrying out their normal daily work using a wireless barcode scanner connected to a base station, while an attacker obtains the Bluetooth address of the base station, for example, through passive eavesdropping on Bluetooth traffic. Through the established Bluetooth connection, the attacker sends a malicious payload to the base station, simulating keyboard keystrokes. The base station forwards these keystrokes to the connected PC, where they are interpreted as legitimate user input and may be used to execute unauthorised commands. This attack pattern was observed across devices from multiple vendors. As a result, the attacker could gain an initial foothold on a computer within the warehouse network. The scanner serves only as the entry point. The significance of this foothold lies in the computer’s trusted position within the operational environment and its connectivity to critical systems. These attack vectors may pose a significant threat not only to the warehouse industry but also to the retail sector and any other domain where such devices are actively used. Kaspersky researchers believe that the same attack scenarios might be used for other warehouse devices like Portable Data Terminals (PDR) or thermal printers to gain access to infrastructure, such as Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). “Modern retail and logistics are profoundly digital, from enterprise-wide management platforms down to every device in a worker’s hands. This pervasive connectivity means that any technology at any tier can become an entry point for a cyberattack capable of destabilising the entire ecosystem – as our research shows, even a single barcode scanner. The warehouse sector, and the broader retail industry, should treat cybersecurity as a top priority across every layer of their operations,” said Sergey Sidorov, Head of Industrial Security Services at Kaspersky. To enhance security in warehouse environments, Kaspersky experts recommend verifying every new device before it connects to the network, disabling any unused Bluetooth interfaces and enforce strong authentication mechanisms, segmenting warehouse networks so that only essential connections are permitted, promptly applying security updates to both devices and the WMS, while restricting account permissions to the minimum required, and regularly conduct full‑scale attack‑path exercises that include scenarios involving insiders with legitimate credentials. Kaspersky offers a comprehensive assessment of industrial environments: uncovering weaknesses in ICS, OT, and networked devices, evaluating configurations and access paths, and mapping vulnerabilities to reveal actionable risks. By assessing systems on-site, Kaspersky ICS Security Assessment (https://apo-opa.co/3W06Wmq) uncovers hidden risks and delivers actionable insights without disrupting operations. These measures can be reinforced with purpose-built solutions such as Kaspersky Industrial Cyber Security (KICS) (https://apo-opa.co/3WB0TVC), designed to protect industrial organisations, including logistics companies. The platform helps enhance visibility across the corporate infrastructure and strengthen cybersecurity without disrupting operations or compromising system availability. The Coca-Cola System Drives USD 3.6 Billion Economic Impact and Supports over 458,200 Jobs Across COMESA Region, Study Reveals

In 2024, the Coca-Cola system contributed USD 3.6 billion in value-added economic activity across the COMESA region. The Coca-Cola system and its value chain supported over 458,200 direct and indirect jobs across the region in sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, retail, transport, and services. The system spent almost USD 1.5 billion on goods and services from suppliers in COMESA member countries, driving local industry growth and economic resilience. During the 19th COMESA Business Forum, a major economic platform for promoting trade and regional integration, the Coca-Cola (www.Coca-ColaCompany.com) system unveiled the results of a new study showcasing its significant economic contributions to the COMESA region. The study was conducted by global consultancy Steward Redqueen and highlights the transformative role Coca-Cola plays in fostering economic progress, creating employment, and supporting local industries. “As this study shows, the Coca-Cola system continues to deliver substantial economic impact in COMESA, creating opportunities through local partnerships, investments, and supply chains,” said Luis Felipe Avellar, President of Coca-Cola's Africa Operating Unit. “The 19th COMESA Business Forum is an important platform to highlight how businesses like those that comprise the Coca-Cola system contribute to sustainable economic development in Africa.” The 19th COMESA Business Forum has brought together leaders from across the region to discuss trade, innovation, and economic growth. Coca-Cola’s active participation as a key collaborator demonstrates its alignment with the forum’s mission of building stronger economic ties across the region’s 21 member countries. The study revealed that the Coca-Cola system, incorporating its network of bottlers, suppliers, distributors, and retailers, contributed USD 3.6 billion to the region’s combined GDP in 2024, representing 0.3% of COMESA’s GDP. Through direct employment and its value chain, the system supported over 458,200 jobs. “For every direct job created by the Coca-Cola system in COMESA, an additional 28 jobs are supported throughout the regional economy,” noted Avellar. In addition to its employment multiplier, the Coca-Cola system’s integration within local economies fuels industrial and community advancement. The report highlighted that Coca-Cola spent almost USD 1.5 billion on suppliers across the COMESA region in 2024, benefitting industries like sugar production, manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. “The Coca-Cola system operates as a critical economic engine across the COMESA region, empowering local suppliers, retailers, and distributors to thrive,” said Alfred Olajide, Vice President of East and Central Africa Operations at Coca-Cola. “The 19th COMESA Business Forum provides a meaningful opportunity to underscore our commitment not just to delivering beverages, but also driving innovation, collaborations, and sustainable development in the region.” Beyond economic contributions, the Coca-Cola system continues to champion sustainability and community development initiatives in the region. Several COMESA member states benefit directly from the Coca-Cola system’s Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, a nearly USD 25 million program that addresses water-related challenges across 20 African countries by 2030. The study leveraged a robust Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) model to capture the Coca-Cola system’s impact across its activities, including operations, local procurement, and extensive value chain linkages. The findings demonstrate how Coca-Cola drives ripple effects through the economy, from agriculture to retail, illustrating the company’s strategic role in driving regional development. Avellar concluded: “The 19th COMESA Business Forum reaffirms the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth. We are proud to collaborate with COMESA in building stronger economies and better futures for the communities we serve.” Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Coca-Cola. Vadzo Imaging Validates 120+dB High Dynamic Range on Falcon-821CRS 8MP AR0821 4K HDR USB 3.2 Gen 1 Camera

The Falcon-821CRS is an 8MP AR0821 4K HDR USB 3.2 Gen 1 Camera, and Vadzo has validated it for 120+dB high dynamic range. Real scenes are rarely evenly lit. A vehicle leaves a tunnel into direct sun, a warehouse door opens onto a bright yard, a storefront window floods a lobby with daylight, and a robot turns from a dark aisle toward a lit dock. Each of these scenes can span 120dB or more from the darkest shadow to the brightest highlight, far more than a single exposure records. The Falcon-821CRS captures that span on the sensor and then finishes the image with an on-board image signal processor that performs debayering, color correction, gamma correction, denoising, auto exposure, and auto white balance before the frame reaches the USB port. As an HDR USB 3.2 Gen1 Camera and a High Contrast Imaging USB Camera, it delivers a usable image straight to the host. Designed for telematics, surveillance, robotics, and retail automation, the module keeps both highlights and shadows in a single frame.
