A Pathway to Possibility: Inside Covia's Structured Training & Experience Program
Fri, 10/16/2026 - 10:15
Body
At Covia, we recognize that our mining operations require a wide range of roles and technical skills. Understanding how it all works means seeing how teams across safety, production, quality, maintenance, supply chain, engineering, and other functions work together to keep the operation running efficiently, safely, and successfully.
Recognizing the value of cultivating well-rounded future leaders, Covia launched the Structured Training & Experience Program (STEP) in early 2026. The program gives recent graduates an opportunity to gain firsthand experience. The 18-month program combines hands-on operations experience with cross-functional exposure throughout Covia to help develop the next generation of plant supervisors, engineers, technical specialists, and other professionals who can support the company’s future.
According to Talent Acquisition Manager Adrianna Ateh, STEP is the natural expansion of Covia’s approach to early-career development. The company started by relaunching its internship program in 2023 to provide college students with meaningful work experience. As that program developed, Covia began looking at what could come next for employees beginning their careers after graduation.“The idea was to create a pathway to opportunities for people who are just graduating from college,” Ateh explained. “This way we can develop internal talent for open positions across Covia and give that talent the opportunity to learn what they like and where they excel.”Ateh and Coleman Rojahn, Talent Acquisition Associate, worked with hiring managers, company leaders, and people familiar with similar graduate programs to rethink what a program could look like at Covia. The result was STEP, with an initial cohort of three trainees:
Gavin Antonini, Marston plant
Nolan Joynt, Hephzibah plant
Favour Ordim, Roff plant
“This year we decided to start with three people when we launched the program and see what works, and what doesn’t work,” Ateh said. “Then we hope to be able to grow it each year and make it better, just like the internship program.”
Learning Covia One Experience at a Time
The objective behind STEP is straightforward: provide recent graduates with immersive, hands-on experience across the plant functions that keep Covia’s operations moving forward. To accomplish that, these graduates needed time to truly experience each aspect of a real mining organization.Over 18 months, trainees progress through a structured series of phases that expose them to both plant operations and the teams that support them. These phases include:
Health, Safety, and Environmental
Operations and Supply Chain
Mine and Quality Control
Maintenance, Parts, and Inventory
Cross-Functional Capstone Project
This structure gives each trainee an opportunity to spend meaningful time with a wide range of functions. Instead of asking someone at the beginning of their career to immediately choose a narrow path, STEP provides opportunities to understand how different functions operate and how they connect. Trainees work with different people and departments throughout the program, gaining technical experience while developing a broader understanding of Covia.
The result is a program designed to be mutually beneficial for Covia and the trainees. Immersive, hands-on experience across core functions helps Covia develop talent across plant operations, while also exposing trainees to different roles so they gain firsthand knowledge of that helps them discover where they can excel and the types of work they enjoy.
Building Relationships Along the Way
STEP is designed to help trainees develop technical knowledge, but that’s just one goal for the program. Covia has also made relationship-building an intentional part of the experience.Bringing STEP participants together gives them peers who are navigating a similar experience, while their rotations allow them to develop relationships with employees across disciplines and locations.“We want them to enjoy the experience and feel that they really are a part of the community,” Ateh said.
With trainees working at different locations and moving through numerous functions, it is important to build a sense of camaraderie despite the distance. The inaugural trainees recently attended a safety boot camp together and regularly participate in monthly meetings as a group to share their experience and identify other areas they may want to explore.
Those connections are already extending beyond scheduled meetings. According to Ateh, the trainees actively connect with each other between meetings. For example, Gavin recently reached out to Favour to learn more about drone applications at the plant level. Favour, who recently earned her drone certification to support operations at the Roff Plant, was able to share her experiences and insights as she begins using the technology in her role. Despite the distance between plants, trainees can create bonds that last.
Developing the Next Generation of Covia Talent
For Covia, STEP is an investment in long-term talent development. For trainees, the program provides a broader view of Covia’s operations and where technical knowledge and leadership are paramount. Discovering those best fits takes time, which is why the program emphasizes experience rather than simply training for a particular position. The current cohort is scheduled to complete their program in June 2027, at which point they’ll each have gained experience that prepares them to be part of the next generation of Covia talent across operations.
For Gavin, Nolan, and Favour, the next several months will continue to expose them to new teams, responsibilities, and experiences. Where those experiences ultimately lead will be different for each of them. And while the current group continues to learn, Covia is actively recruiting for the next cohort, continuing the cycle of professional development that will help shape Covia for years to come.

The East African Community (EAC) Partner States have advanced regional efforts to strengthen e-commerce and digital trade, with a focus on improving data and monitoring, building consumer trust, enhancing preparedness for implementation of the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade, and accelerating implementation of the EAC E-Commerce Strategy.
The measures were discussed during the EAC Regional E-Commerce Engagement Platform meeting held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 13th to 15th October, 2026. The Platform provides a structured mechanism for Partner States to collaborate on areas critical to the effective implementation of the EAC E-Commerce Strategy, including policy and regulation, digital infrastructure, logistics, cybersecurity, online marketplaces and payment systems.
A major focus of the meeting was strengthening the Monitoring and Evaluation Tool for the EAC E-Commerce Strategy. Partner States reviewed and updated baseline data, drawing on recommendations emerging from National E-Commerce Engagement Platforms held between September and October 2026. The process is expected to strengthen the availability and quality of data for tracking implementation of the Strategy and informing policy decisions.
The Chairperson of the meeting, Mr. Chris Matsiko, Commercial Officer at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Uganda, noted that e-commerce presents significant opportunities to expand market access, facilitate cross-border trade, promote entrepreneurship and enable micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to participate more effectively in regional and global value chains.
“These opportunities can only be realised through deliberate and coordinated efforts to address prevailing challenges, including gaps in digital infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, logistics, payment systems, digital skills, consumer protection and the availability of reliable data to inform policy decisions,” said Mr. Matsiko.
The meeting also considered lessons emerging from the Knowledge Exchange Forum on Building Trust in E-Commerce, held in Switzerland and Serbia in July 2026, and identified priority areas for regional action to strengthen trust and confidence in cross-border e-commerce. These actions include harmonising consumer protection frameworks, strengthening online dispute resolution mechanisms, promoting initiatives that enhance trust in digital transactions, and deepening public-private dialogue to support a more secure, transparent and enabling regional e-commerce environment.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Gordon Kalema, Eastern Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (EARDIP) Project Manager, noted that digital trade presents an important opportunity to deepen regional integration and expand market opportunities for East African businesses.
“Intra-EAC trade has grown from USD 1.6 billion in 2005 to USD 19.65 billion in 2025, underscoring the significant potential of e-commerce to build on this progress by expanding market access, creating new opportunities for businesses and further deepening regional economic integration,” said Mr. Kalema.
Partner States also reviewed progress in implementing the EAC E-Commerce Strategy and considered measures to further strengthen coordination and accelerate implementation. Through continued cooperation under the Regional E-Commerce Engagement Platform, the EAC seeks to foster a more coordinated, trusted and evidence-driven environment in which businesses and consumers can take advantage of the opportunities presented by e-commerce and digital trade.
Through the Eastern Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (EARDIP), the EAC is advancing the development of a regional single digital market by strengthening connectivity, harmonising data governance, enhancing cybersecurity, improving digital payment interoperability and supporting cross-border e-commerce. Together, these interventions are helping to create a more connected, secure and integrated digital environment in which businesses and consumers can access services, transact and participate in the regional digital economy across borders.

SINGAPORE, Oct 16, 2026 - As energy commodity markets grew more volatile and complex throughout 2026, Alkagesta has advanced a series of environmental, social, and governance commitments across its global trading platform — reflecting a conviction that responsible growth and commercial growth are not in tension, but are built on the same foundations.
ESG: Responsible Trading Across Asian and European Markets
Among the most distinctive of those commitments is the investment by Alkagesta in Clean Caspian, an environmental research start-up developing technologies to contain oil spills and separate oil from contaminated water in enclosed marine ecosystems. Alkagesta invested in the project in May 2026, recognising that as a trader of petroleum products, oil spill risk is one of the most material environmental exposures associated with its business.
In September 2026, the Clean Caspian team completed Phase I of its research, identifying two formulations for oil spill response — a two-stage approach combining a surface-localising reagent with a flocculant-coagulant to enable more efficient oil-water separation. Phase II will optimise both formulations, test them under different environmental conditions, and progress patent applications.
Across sustainable fuels, Alkagesta secured a five-year feedstock offtake agreement for Used Cooking Oil and a multi-year biofuel storage agreement at Pantank in Antwerp, bringing total storage capacity across Europe and Asia to 700,000 m³. Alkagesta holds ISCC EU and ISCC CORSIA certifications, underpinning the ability to trade and supply certified sustainable fuels across aviation and marine sectors.
The ESG Framework governing these commitments is publicly available on the Alkagesta website. In 2026, the company also received the EcoVadis Committed Badge — an independently assessed recognition of sustainability performance across environmental, social, ethical, and procurement dimensions. For Alkagesta, ESG is not a reporting exercise — it is a framework for managing the real risks that come with trading energy commodities across approximately 48 countries, and for building the long-term institutional relationships on which sustainable growth depends.
Those commitments are not separate from the commercial business — they are embedded in how it operates. Nowhere is that clearer than in Singapore, where Alkagesta has built a marine fuels hub from the ground up over the past year, combining rapid commercial growth with the risk management and compliance standards that define the company's approach across all markets.
Singapore: A Market Position Built from the Ground Up
Established under Alkagesta Asia Pte in July 2025, the Singapore hub reached monthly delivered volumes of approximately 250,000 metric tonnes — around 5% of Singapore's marine fuels market — within its first full year of operations. First-half 2026 revenue from the hub reached $1.01 billion, representing approximately 171% growth versus the full year 2025, with 1.65 million metric tonnes delivered — up 104% from 0.81 million metric tonnes across the full year 2025.
The performance was built on a deliberate infrastructure-first approach: securing storage capacity at Horizon Terminal, developing a distribution business in the short market, and assembling a team of trading, operations, and finance professionals capable of operating through one of the most complex periods in recent marine fuels market history. The hub navigated significant prompt availability constraints, elevated freight rates, and Persian Gulf supply friction throughout the year — emerging with a stronger commercial position and a deeper network of counterparty relationships.
These results form part of a record first half for Alkagesta globally. Group revenue reached $3.5 billion in the first half of 2026, with trading volumes rising 53% year on year to 4.9 million metric tonnes. Full-year 2026 group volumes are expected to exceed 10 million metric tonnes, building on a record 2025 financial year in which Alkagesta generated $4.7 billion in revenue.
Orkhan Rustamov, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Alkagesta, commented: "These results reflect the progress we have made through a measured and disciplined approach to growth. Despite significant volatility across global commodities markets, our focus has remained on serving our clients reliably and building our business on strong, long-term relationships. We will continue to grow strategically, step by step, strengthening our presence in the markets where we operate and ensuring that our communication lines, capabilities and regional networks remain resilient."
