World Health Organization (WHO) supports Nigeria after first Ebola case confirmed

The patient is a woman who recently travelled from Uganda and began showing symptoms on 7 October, four days after her arrival.  The woman sought care at a private health facility in the capital, Abuja, on 11 October; laboratory testing confirmed the diagnosis on 20 October.  She remains in isolation and is receiving medical care as investigations continue to determine the likely source of her infection and reconstruct her full travel and exposure history.   Contact tracing underway  WHO said the Nigerian health authorities have so far identified 44 contacts who are being monitored amid intensified efforts to find other people who may have been exposed.  Infection prevention and control measures are being ramped up in the private health facility where the woman sought care.   Cases in five countries  Nigeria is the fifth country to detect Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease since an outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in mid-May – the deadliest in the country’s history.  More than 9,500 cases and more than 4,200 deaths were recorded as of 18 October, according to latest data from the Congolese health authorities. There is currently no vaccine to treat the virus.  Uganda also faced a deadly outbreak which was officially declared over in late August, while nine cases have been reported in Kenya and one in the Netherlands that are linked to the DRC.  Containing virus spread   The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has activated its incident management system to coordinate response efforts, WHO said.  The UN agency stressed that rapid identification of cases, timely follow-up of contacts and effective infection prevention and control are critical to contain the spread of the virus.   WHO and partners are working closely with the Nigerian health authorities to strengthen control measures, including case investigation, contact tracing, infection prevention and control. The agency is also assisting with the provision of essential supplies including personal protective equipment for health workers.   Meanwhile, WHO has advised all countries in the region to sustain a high level of readiness as the DRC outbreak continues to evolve.   Governments are also advised to maintain strong disease surveillance and ensure that laboratories can safely test suspected cases, among other measures.  WHO has not recommended any restrictions regarding travel and trade with affected countries.  Distributed by APO Group on behalf of UN News.

Nigeria NOW! opens its project boardrooms to global investors in Abuja

Platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, lithium and rare earth elements lie together in one mineral province in Kaduna State, which the Minister of Solid Minerals Development announced in June as world-class and the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency has verified. The Ministry opens its doors to global investors at Nigeria NOW!, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja on 19 and 20 November. Processing is following the discoveries, as lithium facilities of $600m in Nasarawa State and $200m near Abuja sit alongside a $400m rare earth processing project in Nasarawa, and mining lease applicants must now submit value-addition plans. Annual mining revenue has risen from about N6bn before the current administration to more than N70bn by the end of 2025. The routes to export markets are moving too, as the Federal Executive Council has approved deep seaports at Bakassi and Ondo as public-private partnerships, with the Bakassi port alone valued at $2.27bn. With a month to go, investors and developers travelling to Abuja will meet these projects at close quarters. In investor boardrooms, the Government of Nigeria will review specific projects in depth, from large-scale infrastructure to multilateral programmes such as Mission 300. Speaking to Energy News Network in September, Tunde Arisekola, Senior Advisor, Geological and Minerals Information at the African Minerals Development Centre, who joins the minerals session on the first day, said that “first and foremost all international investors coming to Abuja should understand that Nigeria is ready and open for business”. In the same interview he described Nigeria’s economy as “stable, safe, peaceful and welcoming to all international investors”. The programme opens with a welcome from the Chief Host, H.E. Dr Oladele Henry Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, followed by sessions on how the Ministry of Power will drive capacity into Nigeria’s industrial hubs and on the policies opening the minerals sector to foreign investment, including domestic processing and value addition. The second day turns to the pipeline of transport and port infrastructure and the $1bn Domestic Green Bond, and closes with an investors’ clinic on the 2025 Tax Act. Lagos State Government, a Nigeria NOW! partner, now regulates its own electricity market after NERC transferred oversight to the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Hon. Biodun Ogunleye, Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, told Energy News Network that “capital follows bankable cashflows”. The state’s job, he said, is “to create both the infrastructure plan and the commercial architecture that makes that plan financeable”. On Friday 20 November, YES! Nigeria runs alongside the main programme under the theme “Empowering Today’s Entrepreneurs, Building Tomorrow’s Industrialists”. Abuja University and Philomath University are partners, and the Youth Sustainable Development Network is Community Partner. Its opening session hands the stage to young Nigerians already at work in the sector, among them Damilola Hamid Balogun of YSDN and Emmanuel Terwase of Boost Power. Nigeria NOW! is held under the patronage of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, with the Lagos State Government, the Nigerian Indigenous Women in Mining & Natural Resources Organisation, Women in Mining, Nextier and The Electricity Hub as partners. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of EnergyNet Ltd.. Media contact: Poliana@EnergyNet.co.uk About Nigeria NOW! South Sudan - Beyond the numbers: the hidden human cost of conflict

In South Sudan’s Jonglei State, recurring clashes between youth from Duk and Twic East counties have left fear and displacement in their wake. A four-day patrol by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to Duk county witnessed firsthand the impact of the ongoing violence on local communities. Peacekeepers had planned to visit Poktap, Padiet, Payuel and Pajut to assess security conditions in areas where revenge attacks and resource disputes have fueled tensions since 2023. However, the patrol had to be cut short. “Muddy and damaged roads prevented us from reaching Duk Padiet and Pajut, making Poktap our ultimate temporary base for three nights. But despite this, we actively engaged communities and authorities to identify pressing security concerns,” explained Augustine Nana Yaw Asare, Military Liaison Officer. In Poktap, located between Padiet and Twic East, residents described an uncertain life in which even routine activities carry life-threatening risks. “Living in Poktap right now means being trapped in the crossfire. Our survival relies on traveling between Padiet and Twic East, but movement has become nearly impossible. We are stuck, unable to buy food or essentials and are in constant fear of being attacked,” said local resident Dabora Akech Lual. Community leaders say that conflict affects every household. “As a father, whenever you leave home to search for food, you are overcome with fear about what might happen to your family while you are away,” revealed Chief Daniel Mawut Ajak. For people displaced by armed violence in northern Jonglei earlier this year, Poktap offers a fragile sense of safety. Having fled one conflict, they now face insecurity, restricted movement and dwindling access to basic necessities. Amou Ding Malang fled Panyang payam with her six children after violence reached Pajut, an attack that claimed her husband’s life. “I long to return to Panyang, but we are trapped by both a lack of transport and the fear of being ambushed along the road,” she said. Others face the growing threat of hunger. Thon Chuol, who was displaced from Lankien in Nyirol county, warned that dwindling food supplies and erratic rainfall were worsening an already precarious situation. “We are now facing a different threat, hunger. Our hosts have been generous, sharing whatever little food they have, but the crisis is deepening every day.” Yet, the presence of peacekeepers can help restore confidence and create conditions for communities to return home. About 15 kilometers towards Pajut, in Payuel payam, sustained UNMISS patrols have reassured residents of a village once deserted because of intercommunal cattle raiding and abductions. “Following a devastating attack that left many dead and numerous herds of cattle stolen, UNMISS increased patrols. This restored our confidence to stay and encouraged some displaced families to return. We are always grateful when peacekeepers visit our village. Our earnest plea is for these security threats to be addressed once and for all,” said Mary Adhau, a local women’s leader. But lasting peace will require more than security patrols. Local authorities are also calling on young people, community members and the diaspora to reject revenge attacks, help rebuild trust between the two communities and refrain from using social media to incite hate. “Such violence serves no purpose other than the destruction of our own people. We need collective action to stop it,” said Abraham Leek, Deputy Executive Director of Duk County. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

From curiosity to career: Delta’s DREAM Flight continues to build the aviation talent pipeline

For approximately 160 aspiring aviators from across the Atlanta metro, Oct. 20 was the day the sky stopped being the limit. Students boarded Delta’s 26th annual DREAM Flight at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, Ala., for a firsthand look at the careers that could one day be theirs. Students from local Atlanta schools and organizations including, Rex Mill Middle, Elite Scholars, the Kindezi Schools, Morrow High School, OBAP ACE Academy and The Atlanta Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen S.T.R.E.A.M. Program spent the day exploring what it takes to connect the world through flight and meeting the people who make it happen. Rotating through four interactive experiences, students toured the Airbus A320 Final Assembly Line and took part in a scavenger hunt on aircraft manufacturing. They tackled aviation-themed activities and challenges at the Old Canteen Center, operated drones and flight simulators at Flight Works and explored the Advanced Manufacturing Program and facilities at Bishop State Community College. Before heading home, students heard from a panel of Delta and Airbus leaders at Bishop State, including Kurt Ford, Managing Director of Flight Training; William Cossey, Managing Director of Supply Chain Management; Tyesha Gray, Director of Human Resources; Julian Anugom, Director of In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity; and Roderick Rogers, Head of A220 Quality Product Improvement at Airbus. These leaders shared their own career journeys and answered questions about navigating the industry. “Every student on this flight has the potential to become a pilot, engineer, technician or leader. Representation can be a powerful catalyst for unlocking potential, especially when students see people who look like them building, flying and leading in this industry.  Delta’s DREAM Flight helps them better understand the variety of career pathways in the aviation industry,” said Keyra Lynn Johnson, Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Social Impact Officer.  DREAM Flight’s founder honored This year, former Delta pilot and U.S. Air Force veteran John Bailey was inducted into the OBAP Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual conference. The honor recognizes Captain Bailey’s long career dedicated to opening doors for young people who dream of flying, from helping bring OBAP’s ACE Academy to Delta to founding Delta’s DREAM Flight. After flying military transport aircraft for the U.S. Air Force, including missions in Vietnam, Bailey joined Delta in 1973. As a newly hired pilot based in Boston, he often flew round-robin charter flights around the city for terminally ill children, and those flights sparked the idea to create a similar experience for kids who dreamed of becoming pilots. In July 2000, Bailey piloted the first DREAM Flight to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., with 150 students from Atlanta City Schools on board. An all-Black crew of Delta pilots volunteered their time to operate the flight, and members of the Tuskegee Airmen greeted students in Washington. They returned to Atlanta on time, and 26 years later, DREAM Flight remains a one-day journey from takeoff to touchdown. Growing the next generation of aviators  Delta’s DREAM Flight bridges the gap between early curiosity and future career options by building students’ interest in aviation through fun, hands-on educational experiences and pairing them with mentors. By making these foundational experiences readily available and financially accessible, Delta’s partnership with OBAP has successfully reached more than 4,000 young people to date. Many DREAM Flight alumni have gone on to build careers at Delta, including: First Officer Kyle Foley was just 12 years old when he boarded the very first DREAM Flight in 2000. Seeing the pilots and controls up close for the first time set him on a path that led to a career flying for Delta. First Officer Curtis Jackson took DREAM Flight as a teen and grew up looking up to Bailey as one of Delta’s pioneering pilots. Bailey’s advice to keep pushing himself until he reached his goals stayed with Jackson on his path to the flight deck. DREAM Flight is one of several Delta programs, including WING Flight, ACE Academy and the National Flight Academy, that introduce students to aviation careers and expand the aviation talent pipeline. Working together to expand horizons Airbus and Delta have long shared common goals for the future of travel from the talent in the industry to the aircraft to get us there. Earlier this year, Delta announced the addition of 31 next-generation Airbus widebody aircraft to its fleet, an investment that will fuel international growth and accelerate fleet renewal in the years to come.  “We talk a lot about the future of aviation, but you can’t actually build that future without bringing new voices and fresh perspectives into the fold,” said Roderick Rogers, Head of A220 Quality Product Improvement in Mobile. “Opening our doors in Mobile to Delta’s DREAM flight is our way of showing these students that there is a very real, accessible place for them in this industry, whether that's in the cockpit or right here on the manufacturing floor.” Mobile is one of five cities worldwide where Airbus commercial aircraft are assembled. The Mobile Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility has more than 2,000 employees who produce A320 and A220 Family aircraft for customers in the U.S. and Latin America. Earlier this fall, Delta and Airbus also partnered on Delta’s 11th annual WING (Women Inspiring Next Generation) Flight, which brought 160 young women from Atlanta to the same Mobile facility in celebration of Girls in Aviation Day.

Roche presents new pivotal trial data across broad neuroimmunology portfolio at MSToronto2026

Fenebrutinib FENtrepid and FENhance 1 & 2 late-breaking data demonstrate a therapeutic effect on chronic active lesions, addressing a primary driver of long-term disability progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) Fenebrutinib FENhance 1 & 2 Phase III pooled data show a 55% reduction in annualised relapse rate (ARR) vs active comparator Following European Commission paediatric approval on 15 October, new Ocrevus OPERETTA 2 Phase III data show 90% of children aged 10–17 remained relapse-free over two years Featured in "Best of MSToronto2026", Enspryng METEOROID Phase III data highlight significant attack reduction and improved functional recovery in MOGAD, an underserved autoimmune disease Basel, 21 October 2026 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROP; OTCQX: RHHBY) announced today new Phase III data for investigational fenebrutinib in multiple sclerosis (MS), demonstrating reduced markers of chronic brain inflammation as well as more comprehensive disease control versus active comparators.1-3 These findings, alongside new Ocrevus® (ocrelizumab) and Enspryng® (satralizumab) data, will be featured across more than 40 abstracts at MSToronto2026 (10th ACTRIMS- ECTRIMS Meeting), held 21 to 23 October in Toronto. Highlights include a fenebrutinib late-breaking presentation and an Enspryng presentation in the “Best of MSToronto2026.4 “Addressing long-term disability progression to preserve people’s independence remains a critical challenge in neuroinflammatory diseases, and particularly in multiple sclerosis,” said Levi Garraway, M.D., Ph.D., Roche’s Chief Medical Officer and Head of Global Product Development. “Our recent data indicate that fenebrutinib can inhibit disease activity inside and outside the central nervous system, underscoring its potential to transform care for people living with relapsing and primary progressive forms of multiple sclerosis.” Fenebrutinib targets progressive biology inside the brain New data from the pivotal trials in RMS (FENhance 1 and 2) and PPMS (FENtrepid) support the potential of fenebrutinib as the first and only high-efficacy oral medicine for both forms of MS. Reduction of chronic active lesions (Late-breaking oral #O137): In the first prospective demonstration of a therapeutic effect on chronic active lesions in MS Phase III clinical trials, data show fenebrutinib reduced the volume of slowly expanding lesions (SELs) by up to 30% (p<0.001) in RMS (over 96 weeks) and PPMS (over 120 weeks), along with a 62% (p=0.001) reduction in accumulation of paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs) in RMS, versus active comparators. These findings demonstrate that fenebrutinib directly targets chronic neuroinflammation in the brain, a primary driver of disability progression in MS.1 Comprehensive disease control (Poster #P1434): In the pooled RMS trials, three quarters (75%) of fenebrutinib-treated patients showed no evidence of disease activity (NEDA-3) meaning zero relapses, zero MRI activity and zero worsening disability at nearly two years, a 70% reduction (p<0.001) versus the comparator. These results show fenebrutinib’s potential to suppress disease activity and delay progression.2 Preserving brain volume and function (Oral #O089): Pooled RMS data show fenebrutinib reduced the annualised relapse rate (ARR) by 55% versus the comparator (p<0.001) over 96 weeks. In addition, fenebrutinib reduced annual total brain volume loss by 23% (p<0.001) and 12-week composite confirmed disability progression by 16% (p=0.04). These findings demonstrate fenebrutinib’s potential to control relapses, to slow brain tissue loss caused by neuronal cell death and to preserve function.3 Ocrevus provides consistent benefits across all age groups New data show that Ocrevus provides significant and consistent efficacy across a broad MS patient population, from children 10 years of age to older adults. Two-year data and immune function in paediatric MS (3 posters on the Phase III OPERETTA 2 study): 90% of children with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) treated with Ocrevus, who were 10-17 years old at trial entry, remained free of relapses over two years (#P1439).5 Ocrevus selectively depleted target B cells with little to no effect on other immune cells (#P1407), while preserving pre-existing immunity to common childhood vaccines in 81–100% of patients (#P1415). The European Commission approved Ocrevus in this indication on 15 October, following FDA approval in May.6,7 Two-year data in patients >55 years old (Poster #P1426 on the Phase IIIb CONSONANCE study): 53% of participants over 55 years old treated with Ocrevus showed no disability progression after two years, similarly to younger participants (55%), showing Ocrevus maintains its effect on progression as people age.8 Switching from other treatments to Ocrevus: Real-world data show progression was the leading reason for patients switching from ofatumumab to Ocrevus (ePoster #EP2733).9 A separate analysis of patients treated with Ocrevus or ofatumumab for one year show Ocrevus was associated with lower MRI lesion activity (Poster #P0305).10 Enspryng reduces risk of attack and is associated with improved recovery Exploratory analyses of the pivotal METEOROID trial suggest that in addition to significantly lowering the risk of relapse (AAN 2026), Enspryng was associated with improved recovery and reduced disability progression, which is critical to prevent permanent damage to the optic nerves, spinal cord or brain in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). These findings reinforce Enspryng’s potential to become the first FDA-approved treatment for MOGAD, with a decision in the U.S. expected in January 2027.4,11 Relapse recovery (Oral #O035): Patients treated with Enspryng achieved numerically superior recovery at 12 weeks post relapse versus placebo (median change in Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] of -2 vs -0.5). Overall function was stable (median 0) with Enspryng, compared to worsening (median 0.5) with placebo, as measured with the EDSS at the end of the double-blind period or first relapse.4  About fenebrutinib Fenebrutinib is an investigational oral, central nervous system (CNS)-penetrant, reversible and non-covalent Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor with an optimised pharmacokinetics (PK) profile. Fenebrutinib can act throughout the body and also cross the blood-brain barrier into the CNS to target chronic inflammation. It is uniquely designed to target relapsing and progressive biology by inhibiting cells in the immune system known as B cells and microglia. Targeting B cells helps control the acute inflammation that causes relapses, while targeting microglia inside the brain addresses the chronic damage that is thought to drive long-term disability progression. While most current BTK inhibitors are covalent and irreversible, meaning they form a permanent chemical bond with the enzyme, fenebrutinib is non-covalent and reversible, meaning it binds and then eventually releases the enzyme. About Ocrevus® (ocrelizumab) Ocrevus is a humanised monoclonal antibody designed to target CD20-positive B cells, a specific type of immune cell thought to be a key contributor to myelin (nerve cell insulation and support) and axonal (nerve cell) damage. Ocrevus IV and Ocrevus subcutaneous (SC; marketed as Ocrevus Zunovo® [ocrelizumab hyaluronidase-ocsq] in the U.S.) are the only therapies approved for both RMS (including relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis [RRMS] and active, secondary progressive multiple sclerosis [SPMS], as well as clinically isolated syndrome [CIS] in the U.S.) and primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS). Both Ocrevus IV and SC are administered every six months. The initial IV dose is given as two 300 mg infusions two weeks apart with subsequent doses given as single 600 mg infusions. Ocrevus SC is given as a single 920 mg subcutaneous injection every six months. About Enspryng® (satralizumab) Enspryng, developed by Chugai, a member of the Roche Group, is a humanised monoclonal antibody that binds to both soluble and membrane-bound interleukin-6 receptors (IL-6R), thereby inhibiting IL-6 mediated signalling, a key pathway involved in inflammation. Enspryng incorporates Chugai’s proprietary antibody recycling technology, which enables pH-dependent binding to IL-6R and repeated engagement of the target, extending antibody circulation and supporting sustained inhibition of IL-6 mediated signalling. Enspryng is the first and only IL-6R inhibitor treatment currently approved in approximately 90 countries for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), including in the U.S. and E.U., with a well-established safety profile in over 16,000 patients. Enspryng was also recently approved for the treatment of thyroid eye disease (TED) in the U.S. Roche is committed to developing Enspryng in additional neurological autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that may benefit from inhibition of IL-6 mediated signalling, including myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) and autoimmune encephalitis (AIE).
